Obasanjo, US Ambassador hold ‘frank discussions’

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, on Thursday, met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The meeting took place at the former president’s penthouse residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.

A statement by Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, explained that the US envoy held private discussions with the former president and later went on a tour of the edifice and  historical artefacts.

He was quoted to have described Obasanjo as a “repository of knowledge, from whom anyone on a visit will learn and go away with.”

According to the statement, the envoy described the presidential library as fascinating and expressed hope for another visit in future.

“It captures the real moment in time when there is so much hope in Nigeria. And, I think we all want to see that come back. It is also a little bit of history for people to see,” the statement quoted Mills as saying.

On his discussion with Obasanjo, Mills reportedly said “I had an open and frank discussion with the former president. He is a very good friend of the United States and we always learn with a visit to the former President Obasanjo.”

The statement also quoted Obasanjo to have said that “since the ambassador reported in the country in August, it has been a very busy schedule to host him and it was therefore pleasant to be his guest today (Thursday).”

The US Ambassador later met with Governor Dapo Abiodun, who solicited the United States Government’s support in his efforts to improve the lives of the people of the state.
