The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has charged private sectors to take advantage of the sporting facilities abound in the state, especially the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, by sponsoring sports event in the facility.

Shaibu, a golfer, said this in a chat with Daily Trust shortly after the tee off golf tournament organised by golfers friends of Engr. Kingsley Okunbor to celebrate his 60th birthday in Benin City.

“Edo is the home of sport, every aspect of sport whether in coaching and playing, Edo has always have that history of having raw talents and being the hub of sport. We lost it for a long time but now we are back”.

“We started by building infrastructure, and now you can see that all competitions are now coming to Edo. NFF election is coming to Edo and Handball Federation has also given us four years to the host the league.

“Athletic federation and others are now using our facility, our stadium is the only one with VAR facilities and natural grass that can be used for any type of game, whether FIFA, UEFA in the country.

“We, as a government, have done our own part and for business to thrive now, we are calling on private sector to come and sponsor events in our facilities” he said.

The Deputy Governor charged the youths to join golf clubs as the era of saying that golf is a game of elites is over, describing golf “as a game of everyone that wants to think deep and be successful in life.

“In golf, every one has a category he or she can fit in, there are very cheap club, medium and very expensive clubs, so people should not think it is expensive”,

“Golf makes the players to think deep. So, Just come and play golf and you would see turnaround in your business and other engagements because when you are playing golf you think deep and your concentration is absolute which is good for business”.

On his party, Engr. Kingsley Okunbor, described the tournament as a show of love by his friends to celebrate his 60th birthday.

“The tournament is a show of love by my friends to celebrate my 60th birthday, they planned this all along, I only got to know of it just few day to the event”

“I am overwhelmed by the show of love and I thank God that I am 60 because if you know what life expectancy is in Nigeria, one has no option but to thank God.”

He said various prices are up for grab during the tournament.
