The Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State, Mr Kehinde Aremu, has said they are targeting 700 rural residents for this year’s edition of Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD).
Mr Aremu who stated this while declaring the programme open in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state, said HIRD was a flagship programme of NYSC aimed at providing free medical services to indigent members of the society, especially the rural population.

He said the team made up of six corps medical doctors, four pharmacists, six nurses, three physiotherapists, four laboratory scientists, among other paramedics, was expected to attend to no fewer than 700 patients, explaining that the services to be rendered included consultancy, vital checks, advice, diagnostics, free drugs and referrals.
He said, “We want to give opportunity to poor people so that they can also come into the quality Medicare net and not continue to patronise patent medicine dealers because they can’t afford to go to hospital.”
