As part of the Community Development Project (CDS), a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olusile Joy Omotola, has donated food items, clothing and offered free medical check-ups for about 71 widows of Ovom community in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

 Olusile, who hails from Ogun State, but currently doing her one-year mandatory national service in Bayelsa State, said the gesture is part of her contributions to improving the welfare of the aged widows in society.

 She said she was moved after a critical understudy of the situation of widows in the community, where she realised that they need proper meals, proper health care and good clothing.

She reached out to them through her project tagged “New Year For Widows”.

 She explained that the goal of the project is to empower the widows in the community with some of the life basic amenities, create a healthy environment for them to support one another throughout the period of widowhood, celebrate their strength and encourage them to keep pushing for the coming years ahead.

 She also coached them on how to take care of their all-round wellbeing, where she advised them to regularly check their blood pressure, blood sugar levels among others.

Among the free services offered by the corps member were sensitisation/health talk on diabetics and high blood pressure for the aged group, free consultation and check-up for widows on blood sugar and blood pressure, donation of wrappers and foodstuffs including bags of rice and garri.
