NYSC DG expresses concern over deaths of corps members in nighttime journeys

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, has expressed deep concern over the loss of lives of many corps members to night journeys.

During a visit to the Kaduna State NYSC temporary orientation camp, Ahmed highlighted the inherent dangers of night journeys and emphasized the tragic consequences, urging corps members to prioritise their safety.

“I consistently stress the importance of avoiding night journeys in every NYSC camp and forum. The safety of your lives is my foremost priority. If you contemplate a night journey, consider the associated risks and reconsider. Your lives are precious to us too,” Ahmed advised.

He cautioned against embarking on journeys late in the day, suggesting that if a journey extends beyond 5pm, corps members should break it and resume the following day.

Ahmed pointed out that unfamiliarity with roads, driver fatigue and other factors contribute to accidents during nighttime journeys.

The director-general also urged corps members to be security-conscious, emphasising that no one could safeguard their lives better than they themselves.

The State NYSC Coordinator, Mr Hassan Taura, stated that the orientation course was aimed at moulding corps members into highly disciplined and patriotic youths capable of leading the country to greater heights.
