Corps members in Osun State have pleaded with the federal government to sustain the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) and strengthen it to enhance national unity, especially among the youth.

The 2021 Batch A stream II corps members held a unity march at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede as part of activities marking the 48th commemoration of the scheme.

During the march, three corps members, Vivian Ekemeze from Anambra State, Umaru Sani from Niger State and Olalekan Okikiola from Ondo State said the NYSC is a good platform for promoting national unity and urged the government to sustain and strengthen the scheme.

The NYSC South West Area Director, Mrs Olufunmilayo Akin-Moses, said the scheme is still very relevant and remains one of the most efficient establishments that have served as a transitional phase for young graduates and helped to offer job experience to them.

The NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Mr Ayodele Adewale Adegoke, while rejoicing with corps members on the celebration, said the establishment of NYSC is the best decision ever made by government as it has effectively ensured national integration, national unity and bridged the gap between various ethnic groups in the country.

The corps members carried placards with inscriptions such as ‘We say No to Scrapping of NYSC’, ‘NYSC has come to Stay’ and ‘NYSC stands for unity’, among others.

NYSC officials joined the corps members in the march as they all went round the camp in celebration mood.

A total of 1,900 are undergoing the three-week orientation programme in Ede comprising 1,600 posted to Osun and 300 to Lagos State.
