The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, established in 1973, aims to promote national unity and integration by deploying young graduates to various states across Nigeria. However, the monthly allowance of N33,000 (approximately USD80) provided to corps members has become a pressing concern.
The reality is that this allowance is grossly insufficient for corps members to live comfortably in states outside their own. In states with high costs of living, corps members struggle to find decent accommodation, feed themselves, and transport themselves to their places of primary assignment.
I urge the government to take immediate action to address this issue. A significant increase in the allowance is necessary to reflect the current economic realities and ensure that corps members can focus on their service without financial stress.
I call on the government to increase the allowance to a minimum of N50,000 per month, provide additional support for corps members deployed to rural areas and review and adjust the allowance annually to keep pace with inflation and the rising cost of living.

By taking these steps, the government can demonstrate its commitment to the welfare and development of Nigeria’s youth. I believe our corps members deserve better, and we look forward to seeing positive changes soon.
