NYG: Oyo sends 200 athletes to South-West zonal elimination competition

No fewer than 200 athletes from Oyo State will participate in the South-West zonal elimination competition for the eighth National Youth Games (NYG), an official said on Wednesday in Ibadan.

The state’s Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke, in a statement, said the Federal Ministry of Sports Development has scheduled the competition for Thursday and Friday at Osogbo.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that young Nigerians aged 15 and below are eligible to participate in the NYG scheduled for Asaba in Delta in September.

“The goal of the competition is to engage the growing youth population meaningfully.

“This will provide a pathway for their career in sports and divert them from social vices, and ultimately foster a robust pool of talented young athletes for future competitions,” Adegoke said.

She said this was the reason 890 athletes from the south-western Nigerian states would converge in Osogbo for the zonal elimination competition.

“The team sports which are open for competition at the zonal elimination event are volleyball, basketball, handball, football, beach volleyball, hockey, cricket and rugby,” the Commissioner said.

She urged the state’s athletes to shun all vices and adhere strictly to the rules of their various sports.

”I urge you to intensify your efforts to perform well and qualify for participation at the NYG slated to hold from Sept. 9 to Sept. 19.”
