Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) has developed a new curriculum for Library and Information science schools programme in Nigeria.
A statement by the council’s Chief Information and Protocol Officer, Ngozi Oboh said the development became necessary because the curriculum used in Nigerian Library schools needed to be more technologically driven.
Oboh quoted the Registrar and CEO of the Council, Dr. Victoria Okojie, as saying that the review was aimed at harmonising the course contents of library school’s curriculum and the integration information and communication technology components.
“More technology courses were introduced as well as management courses with emphasis on project management, finance/budget and communication skills; information literacy, library architecture, knowledge management and business skills such as advocacy, marketing and entrepreneurship among others,” Okojie said.
She said the new curriculum was developed in line with international best practices, adding that the documents would be made public after it had been ratified by stakeholders.
Oboh also quoted the Registrar as saying that LRCN debunked “non-performance and inefficiency” allegation levelled against it by a section of print media, noting that LRCN, in pursuance of its mandate, has organised various national workshops for re-skilling and up-skilling of librarians especially in the use of ICTs.
