Some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) yesterday protested at the head offices of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja demanding the removal of the Chairman of the Commission Ibrahim Larmorde.
The protesters under the auspices of the Coalition of Civil Liberties and Equity alleged that the EFCC has been compromised by a cabal of politicians and as such cannot be expected to effectively fight corruption.
The National publicity secretary of the Coalition, Stanley Onukwufor said: “We have looked into what is happening in the country. We cannot take it. EFCC ought to be a good agency.”
He added that: “They did well in the past and prosecuted corrupt people. But it has turned into something else. So many things have happened. Things have gone wrong. We have a president who wants change and wants things turned around.”
Some of the protesters carried placards that read: “Sack Lamorde now”, “Cabals have hijacked EFCC,” “Lamorde has been compromised,” and “Buhari merge EFCC, ICPC now.”
In a statement reacting to the protest yesterday, the spokesman of the EFCC Wilson Uwujaren said: “The group hinges its demand for Lamorde’s removal on alleged bias in the investigation and prosecution of Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa State and Steve Oronsaye, former Head of Service of the Federation.”
