The Sokoto State government will in collaboration with the Federal Government and the Africa Development Bank soon embark on the reclamation of farmlands in the state at the cost of N4billion.
The programme will involve the first phase of the Kware Dam Agricultural Transformation Agenda.
Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal disclosed this at the flag-off of fertilizer distribution in Rabah LGA of the state yesterday.
He said part of the programme included the drilling of nine boreholes , 17.5km water canals, construction of 53 roads and village markets.
The 9000 tonnes of assorted fertilizer bought at the cost of N1.2 billion would be sold to farmers at the rate of N1,700 per bag for NPK and N1,800 for urea, he said.
Tambuwal added that the state government had inaugurated some committees headed by permanent secretaries to oversee the distribution of the fertilizers. This, he said, was to ensure that only farmers benefited from the commodities.
He urged the people of the state, especially the youth, to avail themselves of the enormous opportunities derivable from the newly established Wurno College of Agriculture.
