The alliance between the leadership of the Senate and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was among the reasons why President Muhammadu Buhari did not invite Senators for peace talk, Senators in the two feuding camps said yesterday.
The alliance of the Saraki’s camp with the PDP had paved way for the emergence of Senator Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President.
Yesterday, President Buhari met for the second time with APC members in the House of Representatives but he is yet to do same with the senators.
Speaking in an interview, a member of the Like Minds camp of Saraki said the President was staying away “because our own crisis is more tense than the legislators at the lower chamber. The Reps seem to be more open to negotiation than we the Senators. .
“But I think all the crises would subside by tomorrow (today) because disciplinary measure would be taken against the rebellious senators.
For his part, a Senator loyal to the Senator Ahmed Lawan camp said President Buhari was not happy with the whole thing.
“They have announced other principal officers and the Senate President have not shown any sign to shift ground,” he said.
The Special Adviser to the Senate President on Media, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyanu when contacted said the President was taking his time to invite the feuding parties at the National Assembly.
“The President cannot see everybody at a time. The President will definitely see the Senators. He is taking it one by one. He is for everybody. Are you insinuating that the President wants peace at the House of Representatives but he doesn’t want at the Senate?”
He described as speculation the report that the leadership of the Senate was planning to suspend the six senators who petitioned the Police over alleged forgery of the Senate rules.
On how far the Senate President had gone in resolving the crisis, he said: “There are efforts being made but if you are expecting a time line, nobody can give that. We are very optimistic the crisis which is being externally propelled will soon be over. In any case members are eager to be left alone to perform their job”.
