The Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday decried the level of noise in the city and urged Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to direct the Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), to discharge its responsibility on the menace.
The Assembly also urged the Ministry of Information and Strategy to embark on public enlightenment campaigns to sensitise the public on the dangers of noise pollution and the need to check it.
Raising the motion on the floor of the House yesterday, the member representing Epe 1 Constituency, Abiodun Tobun, decried the high level of noise from music vendors, street party organisers and outdoor advertisers as well as the indiscriminate use of horns by motorists and cyclists on highways.
Tobun also noted the high culpability of churches, mosques and other faith-based organisations through their various programmes like vigils, mobile preaching, tafsir and calls to prayers.
The law maker said noise had become a major health hazard as recently raised by the Nigerian Hearing and Speech Association (NHSA).
The House, after hearing presentations from other members, urged the Ministry of Home Affairs and Culture to ensure that the use of public address systems is discouraged.
