The Presidency has said that the armament required to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency can only be acquired from the United States.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina stated this last night while fielding questions on a Channels Television programme tagged “Politics Today” which was monitored by our correspondent.
Adesina said: “The kind of armament Nigeria requires can only be gotten from that part of the world (the United States). If you recall, the president said if Nigeria has access to that calibre of weapons, it is going to be easy for the war against insurgency to be won in the shortest possible time.”
The presidential aide said since the American Leahy Law forbids selling arms, “when it is going to be considered, it would have to go to the Congress and President Buhari is positive that it will sail through at the Congress.”
He said while arms deal could not have been agreed between Nigeria and the US in four days of Buhari’s official visit because due process had to be followed. According to Adesina, President Buhari asked for the intelligence and technology required to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency “and we hope that the US will react soon.”
