Kogi gov: Arsonists raze INEC office in Dekina ahead of supplementary polls

Less than 12 hours to the December 5 supplementary governorship election in Kogi state, suspected arsonists have burned down the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Dekina local government area in the eastern senatorial zone of the state.

The arsonists besieged the INEC office at about 2am on Friday burning INEC materials despatched to the area for tomorrow’s election.

The INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kogi, Mallam Hussaini Halilu Pai, who confirmed the incident added that it was the handiworks of some ‘anti democratic elements’.

He said the Commission has sent down new election materials to the area while arrangements have been made for  temporary office in readiness for the supplementary election.

He said the Commission will go on to conduct the election as scheduled.

Spokesman of Kogi state Police Command, Mr William Aya said the Police was carrying out investigations into the incident.

He added that the Divisional Police Officer in the locality has deployed ant-riot mobile policemen to the area to make arrest and establish the extent of destruction to electoral materials and the office building.
