The Presidency has said that President Muhammadu Buhari was not in direct talks with his United States counterpart, Barrack Obama, on Tuesday over the issue of same-sex marriage.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina stated this in his twitter account late Wednesday night.
President Buhari arrived Abuja from the United States in the early hours of yesterday after a four-day visit on Obama’s invitation.
Adesina clarified that the issue of same-sex marriage came up at the joint session of the United States Senate and House Committees on Foreign Affairs.
The presidential spokesman said while the issue of gay marriage was not pushed at the session, talks shifted to another matter once Buhari emphatically stated Nigeria’s position on it.
He said: “The same-sex marriage issue came up at the joint session of the (US) Senate and House Committees on Foreign Affairs, not in direct talks with Obama. Talks shifted to another matter once President Muhammadu Buhari emphatically stated Nigeria’s stand on same-sex marriage. The issue was not pushed.”
The presidential spokesman had earlier said: “The issue of gay marriage came up here yesterday (Tuesday). President Muhammadu Buhari was point blank. Sodomy is against the law in Nigeria and abhorrent to our culture.”
