The police in Enugu have denied closing the Assemblies of God Church, Mount Parish, Enugu, but only deployed its personnel to the premises to prevent anarchy after the recent incident in the church.
The command’s spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, said in Enugu yesterday that the church was neither closed down nor worshippers ordered to leave the premises, adding that the Divisional Police Officer in Ikerike took it upon himself to ensure that the two warring factions of the church did not act contrary to the law.
The church turned into a battlefield on Sunday when two pastors and their supporters engaged in physical combat over who should control the parish.
One of the pastors, Rev Nathaniel Udeze, came with letters of posting and court documents in preparation to be installed as the new pastor, but his rival, Rev. Amaechi Agbo and his supporters resisted it. The case is now in court.
