Former Attorney-General and minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi has criticized persistent calls for constitutional amendment on the basis that the existing constitution is a military creation.
Agabi spoke at the 4th Annual Lecture of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in honour of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mahmud Mohammed yesterday in Abuja.
He said dismissing the country’s constitution as not being a “peoples constitution” because it was given by the military while retaining the states, local governments, roads, schools, and other infrastructure created by the military, was pretentious.
Speaking on the topic “Law as an instrument of excellence,” he warned that “we cannot dismiss our nation as artificial creation because most other nations are also artificial creations.”
He emphasized the need for all ethnic groups to subjugate themselves to the nation, adding that criticizing the country’s failings on the grounds of corruption is wrong.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Vincent Tenebe announced that the CJN planned to obtain a post-graduate diploma in Agriculture from the university.
