The Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the running of science-based post graduate programmes in the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Delta State.
Pro chancellor of the university and chairman of the governing council, Prof Shehu Abdullahi Zuru, who disclosed this Tuesday after the council’s routine meeting said that the NUC accreditation came after concerted efforts by the council and university management to provide requisite academic, administrative and infrastructure obligations necessary for the approval.
“In keeping with the long standing tradition of this council, we have just had deliberations on serious issues that affect the university. We just concluded our third council of the year and we deliberated on very serious issues.
“At the core of the mandate of the university and particularly of interest was the approval of the PG programmes by the council of the university and the NUC accreditation has been obtained.
“The programmes are science based courses, namely; Chemistry, Physics, technology and other aspects of natural sciences. The council dwelt extensively on the viability of those programmes and how the university intends to make a success story around the approved post graduate programmes.
“The only area that we are having some issues with the NUC regarding resource verification and approval of the programme, is in the area of information technology.
“The council has already taken immediate measure to put the required resources in place and we shall very soon invite the NUC for resource verification so that we could possibly have the programme approved for the university”, the chairman of FUPRE Council stated.
