Defending champions, Plateau United began their title defence with a 2-0 loss at home to visiting Kwara United on Match Day 1 of the 2020/21 Nigeria Professional Football League season yesterday.

Visiting Kwara United in the process earned the first away victory with goals from Jide Fatokun and Michael Ohanu in the 62nd and 69th minutes of the clash.

In the same vein, IfeanyiUbah FC secured all three points against Lobi Stars to end a seven-match winless run against the 2018 champions.

Nasarawa United was able to defeat Wikki Tourists with a 2-1 scoreline. Wikki’s Promise Damala scored the first goal of the season in the 5th minute but Reuben Nicodemus scored a brace, which is also the first of the season.

Adamawa United shared the spoils with Kano Pillars while MFM FC recorded their first win against Warri Wolves in the NPFL after five attempts with a 2-1 victory over the visiting team while Jigawa Golden Stars secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sunshine Stars who have now failed to win their opening match in the last eight NPFL seasons.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that Nasarawa Utd adhered to the club licensing guidelines as well as the COVID-19 protocols as no fans were allowed in the stadium.

It was also observed that most of the officials and the few spectators had face masks to guard against contracting the virus.

Another spectator said that the fans didn’t come to the stadium to guard against contracting the virus as some high profile personalities have died from it in the state.

Daily Trust observed that as a precautionary measure, doctors, ambulances and other paramedics were present at the stadium.

Meanwhile, action continues today when Katsina United trades horns with Heartland while Akwa United takes on Dakkada FC in a derby clash.
