In a press conference yesterday in Abuja, the youth said Akume as a third term senator has the competence and experience to lead the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
National coordinator of the group, Comrade Bashir Maru, said Akume is best suited for the Senate presidency because of his experience as third term senator and governor for eight years.
He said the practice all over the world is that a minority leader assumes leadership of the parliament whenever his party becomes the majority in the parliament.
“Following extensive deliberations, we have decided to throw our weight behind Senator George Akume to emerge as Senate president of the National Assembly,” Maru said.
He said Akume has distinguished himself as a detribalised Nigerian and team leader in all his previous assignments.
As a minority leader of the Senate, Akume “has been a strong rallying point for the opposition parties and also a stabiliser of our democracy,” the youth said.
“Akume led a robust and pragmatic opposition and he is one of the major drivers of change, a process which prepared ground for other senators to swell the ranks of the opposition,” Maru said.
