Northern groups protest insecurity in Benue, urges FG to equip SWAT

A Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) in Benue State on Friday protested against insecurity in northern parts of the country.

The group called on the Federal Government to put an end to insecurity challenges bedeviling northern states of the federation including Benue.

CNG’s national executive from Benue state, Comrade Ben Idoko, who led the peaceful protest to the premises of the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) Secretariat in Makurdi stressed the need for the government to empower the newly established SWAT in order to curb insecurity across the country.

Idoko emphasised that the attention of the government at all levels to do more to halt the multifaceted security challenges confronting Benue state, northern Nigeria and the country at large cannot be over emphasised.

He urged the federal government to do more in terms of equipment for the security agencies and improve their welfare so as to boost their morale and enhance their proactive capacity.

He added that the state governments must be supported in their bid to embark on visible practicable steps to arrests challenges of insecurity in their domain while commending the Benue state government on its efforts so far at maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in the state by nipping crimes and other social vices in the bud.

The group however vowed to sustain the protest until their demands are met even as they urged the federal government and Academic Staff of Universities Union (ASUU) to reach an agreement by ending the prolonged strike so that students will go back to schools.
