The North East Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed shock and sadness over the demise of Yobe State Commissioner of Youths and Sports, Alhaji Goni Bukar Lawan. 

The commissioner who doubled as the Chairman of Yobe Desert Stars Football Club died in a fatal accident along Damaturu-Kano highway on Tuesday. 

Lawal was said to be travelling to Kano for an official assignment hours after he attended the funeral of a friend in Damaturu. 

Two of his friends who were with him in the ill-fated vehicle are said to be responding to treatment in one of the health facilities in the state. 

In the condolence message signed by Nasiru Abdullahi, the sports writers condoled with the immediate family of the deceased, the government and people of Yobe State and prayed to God to grant the bereaved the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. 

“Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN North/East Zonal Office has received with shock the news of the demise of Yobe State Commissioner of Youth and Sports who doubles as the Chairman Yobe Desert FC, Alhaji Goni Bukar Lawan as a result of a ghastly accident. 

“Our heartfelt sympathy goes to the family of Alhaji Goni Bukar Lawal, the government and people of Yobe State and all stakeholders. We pray God will console them in this trying moment. 

“His invaluable contributions to sports development in the state will remain evergreen in our hearts.”

The late Commissioner was a former member of the House of Representatives, representing Bursari, Geidam, and Yunusari federal constituency.
