The Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Dr Lateef Ademola Olatunji has said that no tertiary institution in the country is operating a virtual distance learning yet.

This was just as he called on the Federal Government to act fast on the concept to save education in the country.

Olatunji spoke in Offa weekend at the sideline of the activities marking end of the 11th Convocation Ceremonies of the Polytechnic which began on Monday.

According to him, despite tertiary institutions positions and interventions on the issue, no Nigerians university or polytechnic has yet to commence distance/virtual learning in the country.

He said “What majority were doing was learning via WhatsApp and other social media platforms.

“In virtual learning, you received classes, meet your lecturers and even do your exams and assignments real time on time interactively.

“Tell me how many of our universities and students even know what virtual learning is all about in the real sense of the word.

“So the government needs to act fast on the issue of E-Learning to save the country’s education. What we are having now is not virtual learning, I stand to be corrected”, he added.

The Rector said 12,161 students graduated during the ceremony which was for two sets of 2018/2019 and 2019/2020.

He however, added that “440 bagged distinctions in various disciplines while 3,744 got Upper credit. About 6,638 had Lower credit and 1,445 made Pass”.
