The Enugu State Government yesterday said there was no casualty or loss of life in the collapse of a section of a pedestrian bridge near Garki Market on Agbani Road Dual Carriage, Enugu South Local Government Area in Enugu.
The scaffold framework of a section of the stair-way caved in at the early hours of June 12.
The State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Greg Nnaji, confirmed the incident in a statement.
He said that he and his ministry officials had visited the site for an on-the-spot assessment of the incident.
Mr Nnaji said that the ministry had issued a ‘stop-work-order’ to the contractor handling the project and that the incident was caused by “the sudden break of the concrete framework during the casting of the stair flights for the pedestrian crossing bridge.’’
The affected pedestrian bridge is one of three such bridges the Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi-led government is building within the Enugu metropolis.
The other two are located at Mayor Bus Stop along Agbani Road, while the third is in front of Ogbette Market Road.
