NNPP crisis: Faction expels Kwankwaso as ex-chair, Alkali dumps party

The crisis bedeviling the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has taken another dimension as the Lagos faction of the party yesterday announced the expulsion of Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the national leader and presidential candidate of the party in the February 25 poll.

The crisis is raging as both the Kwankwaso and Dr. Boniface Aniebonam (founder) blocs have refused to shift grounds over the control of the party’s structures.

There have been counter suspensions and expulsions of the officials of the two factions in the past three weeks.

As Kwankwaso, founder fight dirty, will NNPP weather the storm?

NNPP crisis: Faction expels Kwankwaso as ex-chair, Alkali dumps party

A statement released in Lagos by its acting National Publicity Secretary, Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq, said the NEC expelled Kwankwaso because he refused to honour the disciplinary committee’s invitations.

The committee, according to Abdulrasaq, had invited the former Kano State governor to defend allegations of gross anti-party activities and mismanagement of party/campaign funds within five days.

He also said Kwankwaso’s expulsion is in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution 2022 (as amended).

The statement reads in part, “Following the refusal of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso to appear before the disciplinary committee which sat on Thursday, Aug. 31 after being duly invited in writing, he is hereby expelled from NNPP with immediate effect.

“That the erstwhile presidential candidate, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso will be reported to appropriate quarters to answer questions on financial impropriety relating to mismanagement of public funds.”

Meanwhile, the immediate past national chairman of the party, Prof Rufa’i Alkali, has dumped the party following the raging crisis in its fold.

Alkali in a statement yesterday in Abuja, said the accusations and counter-accusations and “avoidable crises”, which has affected the party and led to factions is responsible for his resignation.
