The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Plateau State has expressed worry over what it described as the persistent insecurity in the state saying repeated violent conflicts puts pressure on the already “weak and ineffective health care system.”
The association stated today as parts of activities marking its annual Physician’s week that the crises in the state have constantly interrupted preventive health care services such as routine immunization.
In a statement signed by the Plateau State NMA Chairman, Dr. Titus Dajel and Secretary, Dr. Kumtap Cashmir the association called on the state government to take necessary measures that will lead to the return of peace especially as elections draw closer.
The statement also urged the Plateau state government to take necessary steps to ensure access to quality, effective and affordable healthcare for it’s people through health insurance scheme that will cover both civil servants and the unemployed in the rural communities.
The Physician’s week which will end on the 27 October has this year’s theme as: ‘universal health coverage: leaving no one behind.’
The statement further called the attention of ministries, departments, agencies and all institutions to a new doctor’s stamp/seal aimed at eliminating quackery in the medical profession.
“We admonish every institution to insist on the presence of the doctor’s stamp/seal on all medical reports or certificates as this is the only way to ensure that these reports emanate from a medical practitioner registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria,” it stated.
