The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Shelter Afrique to build the capacity of professionals in the construction industry.
President of the institute, Mohammed Abba Tor, who spoke during the signing of the MOU at the weekend, said the agreement would allow for capacity building of members of NIQS in resource management thereby strengthening skills of professionals in the utilization of intervention funds for projects.
He said the institute is cashing in on Shelter Afrique’s recently announced intention to launch about $2.5 billion bonds with the Central Bank of Nigeria as part of its intervention efforts at bridging the over 17 million housing deficit problem facing the country.
Tor said the collaboration would guarantee accountability and provide avenues for research as both partners share similar vision.
The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Shelter Afrique, Andrew Chimphona, said the company ensures due process in its building projects by adhering to all regulations in a manner that guarantees the structural integrity of the building.
Meanwhile, the NIQS has urged the federal government to consider moving away from expensive, unreliable and highly polluting carbon intensive development and embrace a climate-resilient development model.
The president of NIQS, who made the call during a press briefing to herald its biennial conference and general meeting on ‘Climate Change and Global Disasters: Developing Sustainable Infrastructure Amidst Declining Economic Resources’, said it was imperative for the government to put the right financing in place to ensure sustainable development.
