The Director General of NIMC, Barrister Chris Onyemenam, disclosed this during the official inauguration of the NIMC’s PKI security platform in Abuja recently, said a statement from the NIMC signed by Anthony Onwudiafor, director of communications.
The statement noted that the launch of the self-assigned root Cerfiticate Authority (CA) and a trusted Registration and subordinate certificate Authority (RA and CA) domain administered by the commission was a historical milestone.
It said the PKI is a personalized, chip-based, secure electronic ID card technology platform that uses cryptography to create, store and distribute digital certificates.
These digital certificates maps public keys to entities which can be revoked if need be.
“The DG further invites Nigerians to use the NIMC online pre-enrollment portal on www.ninenrol.gov.ng  assuring that the portal was capable of accommodating everyone even if the whole Nigeria chose to enroll at once,” the statement said.
Also speaking, brand manager of Cryptovision, project partners, Mr. Adam Ross pointed out that security embedded in the card at every level and the chip being delivered is the most modern travel card operating platform that enables it to be used for multiple purposes which has a very high level of security.
He stated that the key document or private key information stored in the chip is protected by hardware, thus the chip itself prevents the card from being accessed by anyone else except the card holder.
