The proprietor and members of the Board of Trustees of Nile University of Nigeria have appointed the Shehu of Borno, HRH Dr. Abubakar Umar Garbai, as chancellor of the university.
By this appointment, the Shehu of Borno will be the honorary head of the university and represent it occasionally in ceremonial and ambassadorial capacity, as well as take precedence before all other members of the university while presiding at meetings or convocation.
The varsity, in a statement, said the appointment of the Shehu of Borno was in recognition of his contributions to the educational and economic development of Nigeria, his achievements, and outstanding landmarks, especially as permanent secretary in the ministries of Finance, Works and Housing, and Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Borno State.
“His royal highness has been an exemplary and sacrificial father and friend to all irrespective of tribe or religion. This is illustrated through his contributions and continuous interest in poverty alleviation, care for widows and orphans, youth development and empowerment since his ascension to the over 1,200-year-old throne of the Borno Empire,” the statement reads.
Similarly, the board also approved the appointment of the Provost, College of Health Sciences, Professor Dilli Dogo, as the vice-chancellor of the university.
Prof. Dogo, a Fellow of the Medical College of Surgeons of Nigeria, and that of West Africa, is a former chairman, Faculty of Surgery, National Post Graduate College of Nigeria. Professor
Dogo graduated with an MBBS degree with distinction in Medicine and Physiology in 1984. He also served as provost, College of Health Sciences, University of Maiduguri.
“Professor Dilli Dogo brings with him over 30 decades of university experience and training to complement Nile University’s rich academic programmes, which are designed to reflect creativity, flexibility, and uniqueness thereby offering students breadth and depth of opportunities for lifelong intellectual and moral growth, as well as global awareness of career choices in traditional and emerging professions,” the statement reads.
He is a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons.
He is an experienced university and medical administrator, and also member of the Governing Council, University of Maiduguri, and Honorary Special Advisor to the Executive Governor of Borno State.
