The Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), Thomas Waldhauser, has said that Nigeria and other countries in the Lake Chad basin were top priorities on the US security agenda in Africa.
The American general, who was on a two day visit to Nigeria, stated this on Thursday while delivering a lecture at the National Defense College in Abuja.
In his capacity as the commander of AFRICOM, Waldhauser is responsible for building defence capabilities, responding to crises, deterring and defeating transnational threats, and promoting regional security and stability.
“The United States views Nigeria as a vital strategic partner, and continues to work closely together on security matters,” he said.
According to him, Nigeria and United States share significant economic ties and security interest, saying US partnership with Nigeria is extremely important.
He reiterated his country’s support in combating the Boko Haram insurgency in the Lake Chad basin, protect civilians, and restore governance and stability in liberated areas.
