Nigeria’s rising star, Munachi aims to be world’s best gymnast

Thirteen-year-old, Munachi Obiefuna has stated that her ultimate desire is to be the best gymnast in the world.

The youngster who represented the FCT at the 2021 National Youth Games emerged overall champion in gymnastics at the 5th National Youth Games where she won four gold and two silver medals.

Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday, the Anambra-born female gymnast said even though gymnastics is hazardous, when her mother wanted to know her choice of sports, she opted for it.

She also said despite the fact that she had broken her ankle a couple of times, she is determined to represent Nigeria at the Olympics and emerge the best in the world.

“When I was younger, my mum asked me what sports I would love to do and gymnastics came to my mind. Gymnastics is an active sport and I love it for its flexibility.

“I have broken my ankle a couple of times. But I want to reach the world stage, perform at the Olympics and be the best in the world. My coach is my support,” she said.

Meanwhile, the FCT administration has rewarded the U-15 athletes who performed who won laurels at the National Youth Games with cash prizes.

This was made known by the Hon Minister of State (FCT), Dr Ramatu Tijani Aliyu who was represented by the Mandate Secretary, Hajiya Hadiza Kabir during an award ceremony yesterday.

“We are giving the gold medalists N150,000, silver medalists N100,000 and bronze medalists N50,000. And we will support them with scholarship awards too. Those that didn’t win anything will be given N15,000 each.

It will be noted that 65 athletes represented the FCT with 36 of them winning medals, 10 gold, 6 silver and 17 bronze medals.
