Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and a presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed concern over the management of Nigeria’s economy, claiming Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product is just two per cent of that of the United States.

Obi said he could make Nigeria an industrialised nation in four years if elected president.

The former governor, who spoke with Arise News on Tuesday, lamented that corruption had eaten up into all the important sectors of the country, unlike in the US where Nigeria borrowed the system of government it practices.

He said, “Corruption kills entrepreneurship; nobody thinks in a corrupt country. Corruption kills professionalism. You can’t be a professor doing research while a councilor earns more money, and you see a house of assembly member dashing away cars that lecturers can’t buy. You’ve a situation where corruption kills hard work. There’s no country in the world where they pay the amount of money we pay to buy electoral forms.

“America, a country where we learn the so-called system of government we are practising has a GDP today, of 20 trillion dollars. Nigeria is only about 2% of America’s GDP.

“Corruption is messy, but you can solve it if the principal person is not involved, if his family is not involved, and if he can control his friends not to be involved.”
