Nigerians doubting the veracity of the data produced by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) are endangering the economy as they are sending wrong signal to investors that want to invest their monies into Nigeria’s economy.
This position was articulated by the Statistician-General of the Federation, who doubles as the Director General of the NBS, Yemi Kale, at a sensitisation workshop held in Abuja yesterday.
“Some members of the public have expressed some scepticism about some of the data produced by the NBS, as they believe the numbers reported do not reflect the reality of things around them,” he said.
Represented by the Director of Real Sector and Household Statistics at the Bureau, Isiaka Olarewaju, the NBS boss, who also blamed journalists for the development, said misinterpretation of the data, rather than deliberate acts from the apex statistical body, could be blamed for the scepticism expressed by some Nigerians.
Kale said data misinterpretation, often times due to poor understanding of the methodology of the data production, could deny Nigeria the needed monies to improve the economic situation of the country.
