A Nigerian scientist, Dr Sulaiman Sadi Ibrahim, has won the prestigious Wellcome Trust Career Development Award of the United Kingdom worth £969,680.
Ibrahim, who was a Wellcome Trust fellow between 2017-2019, became the first Nigerian to receive the award because of the comprehensive, functioning molecular biology laboratory he created in a public university in northern Nigeria.

The funds, which is about N500 million, is to carry out a project spanning eight years to improve the infrastructural capacity in Nigeria; and support both undergraduates and postgraduate students.
Ibrahim, who lectures in Bayero University Kano, is an indigene of Getso town, in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State.
In a post he made on Centre for Research in Infectious Disease (CRID) website, Ibrahim said of his Ph.D thesis, “My thesis addressed the role and allelic variation of resistance genes, the cytochrome P450s from the major malaria vector An. funestus on insecticides resistance across Africa.”
