‘Nigerian doctors have no reason going abroad’

The Chief Medical Director, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Darlington Obaseki, has said medical practitioners in Nigeria have no reason to travel abroad in search of more money.

He said this in Benin yesterday at the Annual General Meeting/Scientific Conference 2022 organised by the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN).

Speaking on the theme “Application of innovations with entrepreneurship skills for sustainable development in our community; A case study with SAVAN”, he said Nigeria is a gold mine for doctors.

“Medical practitioners can make more money in Nigeria if they could look inwards and utilise the opportunities available within them.

“A lot of our colleagues, doctors and nurses are all traveling out of the country and when you ask most of them, the primary reason they are traveling is more economic benefits, which they feel they are not getting enough in Nigeria”.

“So, they are being better paid over there but there are a lot of opportunities of making more money than your salary in the medical field in Nigeria and a lot of non-medically trained persons are making a lot of money in this field and we think that doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists can get into the whole economic value chain of medical practice and make more money and bring more value to the system.

“But the non-medical persons play more in that field than the medical practitioners. Even in the supply of equipment, in consultancies, you see, for example, medical equipment being supplied by those who do not have any knowledge of the field.

“Doctors who are very familiar with these equipment can go into these areas if they do not want to practice again, and they will be able to give better equipment and at the end of the day, create more value for the system while also economically benefiting themselves,” he said.
