The National Agency for the Control of Trafficking in Persons says the Middle East has become a major hub for the trafficking of Nigerian boys and girls for domestic and forced labour.
NAPTIP Director-General Julie Okah-Donli said this in Abuja on Monday at the opening of a two-day workshop on validation of reviewed national policy on protection and assistance to trafficked persons in Nigeria, organised by her agency with support from Action Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants in Nigeria.
“There are new and emerging trend in human trafficking that a lot of people are not aware of such as organ harvesting, trafficking for domestic servitude, forced labour and others which have become very common all over the world.
“For instance, you hear people say these girls were not trafficked because they think trafficking means forced prostitution alone. But people must understand that using even a child for begging, hawking and others are also included.”
