Nigerian arm wrestlers at the ongoing 13th African Games in Ghana have made huge statement as they dominated the events in both the male and female categories.
The arm-wrestling event was a scoring event for the first time at the continental games.
Matthew Sarah won gold in the left arm women 70kg while Elizabeth Zannu who made history yesterday as she became the first ever athlete to win a medal in the arm-wrestling event after defeating Ghana’s Racheal Lankai in the women’s 55kg.
Other arm wrestlers such as Yinusa Idowu won bronze in the left arm men 65kg while Nmeka Samuel also won bronze in the left arm men 85kg.

Ogungbure Blessing won bronze in the left arm women 70kg just as Winifred Ndidi also won bronze in the left arm women 80kg.
In other sports, Team Nigeria beat Rwanda to win the bronze medal in women’s beach volleyball.
Esther Mbah and Pamela Bawa teamed up to win the 3rd place match 2-0: (22-20, 21-12).
Meanwhile, on the medal table, Team Nigeria trail Egypt and South Africa who are placed first and second respectively.
As at the time of reporting this, Nigeria occupy third place with 25 gold, 19 silver and 25 bronze while Egypt sit at the number one spot with 83 gold, 33 silver and 28 bronze medals and South Africa has won 25 gold, 28 silver and 38 bronze medals.
Similarly, with the Games coming to an end next Sunday, 23 March, Egypt is closing in on an astonishing milestone: 100 gold medals at an African Games. With 83 gold, 33 silver and 28 bronze medals – 144 in total – Egypt leads the medal table by a huge margin, more than tripling the tally of the three nations vying for second place such as South Africa, Nigeria and Algeria.
