The Director General of the ECN, Prof. Eli Jidere Bala, has said Nigeria, working with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is set to launch the Renewable Energy Roadmap (REmap) to attract more investment for increased access to electricity and tackle climate change.

Prof. Bala, who stated this yesterday during the presentation of the roadmap study report in Abuja, said ECN officials began the process with IRENA in 2017 and by 2020, a workshop was held in Nigeria where IRENA officials presented the baseline of the roadmap to stakeholders.

“It is our hope that the roadmap study report by IRENA will not only complement our existing policies and plans on renewable energy but to also will give confidence to local and foreign investors to come in to explore and scale up the use of cleaner renewable energy resources to enhance access to electricity for national development and climate change mitigation.

“IRENA has conducted several roadmaps for member countries including the USA, South Africa, among others.

The roadmap is to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and the technology to improve renewable energy access,” noted Prof. Bala

The IRENA representative, Ricardo Gorini, said Nigeria has the unique opportunity to develop its renewable energy sources to improve electricity and mitigate climate change, noting that the study is quite tailored towards realising this by suggesting energy efficiency solutions and advanced renewable energy technologies.

Also speaking, the Chairman, Senate committee on STI, Uche Ekwunife, commended ECN for relating with IRENA on behalf of Nigeria that resulted in the support from IRENA in the production of a Renewable Energy Roadmap (REmap) study report.
