An assistant professor at the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Efe Uwadiae, has said Nigeria is suffering from acute economic water supply shortage.

The professor, who stated this yesterday during the celebration of World Water Day, themed ‘Accelerating change’ organised by CWAY Water Group in Lagos, stressed that lack of infrastructure has hampered effective water supply.

“What we have in Nigeria is economic water scarcity, the infrastructure to bring to the people who need the water is not sufficient, “ he said.

Uwadiae who was the guest speaker explained that having adequate water supply is part of fulfilling Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, but lamented that the country has not met the goal.

To achieve the SDG 6 goal, he advised that the federal government should muster the political will to implement the policy made for the citizens to have potable water.

“We have the right policy but implementation and lack of political will to set it through is not there for the enjoyment of the people,” he said.

The managing director, Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), Engr. Muminu Badmus, revealed that the state produces 210 million gallons of water daily, below the 650 million gallons which ought to be the standard.

The MD, who was represented by the corporation’s chief operating officer, COO Engr. Deji Johnson, added that the output of water the state produces has not been able to meet the increasing population in the state.
