Heifer International, a development organisation, has warned that Nigeria risks losing about N250 billion from the poultry subsector if key challenges facing the sector are not immediately addressed.
Country Director, Heifer International Nigeria, Dr. Lekan Tobe stated this on Monday in Abuja at the launch of the second edition of Poultry Supply Chain Derisking Program (POS-DERP) with the theme “Navigating the Future: Overcoming Challenges and Seizing Opportunities in Nigeria’s Poultry Sector,”
Speaking at the event, he noted that “The poultry sector, which is a subsector under the agric sector is not performing well and it has ripple effects on both crop and livestock because the feed, the the products of the crop sector is used for poultry. So, there will be a ripple effect across the board, you know and that means that Nigeria will be losing so much.
“It’s going to be multiples of billions of Naira, multiples of billions. And I’m not talking about 10 billion or 20 billion. I’m talking about N250 billion, which is why we have been advocating for urgent intervention for MSMEs and farmers in that subsector and it has to be done urgently.
