Public, private universities growing at 50-50 ratio – NUC

For every public university in the country, there is a private one, the National Universities Commission has said, calling it a 50-50 ratio.

Abubakar Rasheed, the commission’s executive secretary, who has been reappointed to a fresh term, says the growth of the larger university community in the country is phenomenal.

“In the last few years with more federal universities coming on board, more state universities are being established and the number of private universities is also increasing almost every year and in such a way that we almost have a 50/50 ratio of all the institutions,” he said.

Professor Rasheed stated this on Monday 23rd August, as he resumed office after the announcement of his re-appointment by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

He said no one person can claim credit alone for a major breakthrough or achievement especially when they talk about leadership of the Nigerian university system, it is a collective responsibility.

He said the success of the commission derives its meaning from the meaningful interactions the NUC holds with the Nigerian University System and pledged to continue to provide good leadership to the Nigerian University System (NUS), as well as the National Universities Commission.

While appreciating President Muhammadu Buhari for his re-appointment he said the next five years places on him a heavy burden of huge responsibility.

“I will not promise anything new but I would rather say, we will do our best to continue those things we have been doing well, we should do our best to improve and make them better for those things we are doing wrongly and we will do our best to point them out and not do them again,” he said.

Speaking, the Deputy Executive Secretary (Academics) of NUC, Dr. Ramon Yusuf, described the Executive Secretary as an administrative Guru, saying he has a lot more to offer the Nigerian University system.

“The major beneficiary of this is the revitilisation agenda which Prof Rasheed started, a lot of people were heartbroken when you left, we all are glad that you are back to continue,” he said.
