A public administrator and University don, Professor Ladipo Adamolekun, yesterday, raised an alarm that Nigeria is teetering on the brink, just as he asked the country’s leaders to arrest numerous challenges facing it.
He also advised political parties in the country to agree never to use ex-military men as their presidential candidates again.

The astute administrator said the two recycled military leaders who have served as presidents during the post-1999 era have demonstrated clearly that military culture trumps democratic values.
The don who spoke at a press conference heralding his 80th birthday celebration and a discussion of his monograph tagged, “Nigeria and I: Getting Politics Right to Make Nigeria Work” said there is an urgent need to make Nigeria work.
He noted that it is important for political leaders at both the central and sub-national levels to adopt and implement a devolved federal system and commit, in word and in deed, to good democratic practice, combined with administrative competence.
According to him, to do this, there is a need to consolidate democracy, tackle insecurity effectively, and accelerate socioeconomic progress.
Recalling many challenges facing the country at the moment, Professor Adamolekun said getting politics right in Nigeria is a must to make the country work again.
He said: “The definition of a failed state is one where the government is no longer in control. By this yardstick, Africa’s most populous country is on the brink. Nigeria has more poor people, defined as those living on less than $1.90 a day, than any other country, including India.”
