The federal government and the West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly (WATRA) have agreed to site the headquarters of the regional telecom regulatory body in Nigeria.
This was disclosed when the FG and WATRA signed the ‘Headquarters Agreement’ in Abuja Thursday.
The minister of communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, who signed on behalf of Nigeria, said the siting of WATRA’s head office in the country would further boost socio-economic development of the whole sub-region.
He said government would give necessary support to ensure quick take off of WATRA operations in the country.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof Umar Garba Danbatta, who was also present at the event, said the signing of the agreement would accelerate the process of designing and adopting a comprehensive framework for the regulation of telecommunications activities in West Africa.
He said WATRA would promote the establishment and operation of efficient, adequate, and cost effective telecom networks and services in West Africa.
WATRA Executive Secretary Elh Maman Laminou said the organisation would work towards the adoption of uniform technical and quality standards for telecom applications and equipment employed in the region.
