The Nigerian Embassy in Benin Republic is set to open up the major borders connecting the two countries.

This is targeted at improving trade relations between Nigeria and the neighbouring country.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Benin, Ambassador Emmanuel Oguntuase disclosed this in a chat with newsmen shortly after the presentation of his Letter of Credence to President Patrice Talon of Benin in Cotonou.

He said the move will commence with Seme Border which is one of the busiest entry and exit points with the installation of ultramodern scanners to monitor and record movement of goods between the two countries.

Daily Trust reports that there have been huge trades between the two countries which are largely unrecorded following the multiplicity of borders covering 778 kilometers across six states in Nigeria.

They are Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Kwara, Niger and Kebbi states.

However, the Ambassador said as part of moves to deepen the trade relations to make them beneficial to the two countries, the Federal Government in line with ECOWAS trade liberalization approved the procurement of equipment to easily monitor and record the volume of trade between the countries.

He also tasked businessmen and investors in Nigeria to consider investing in Benin Republic which he described as a virgin land.
