Niger to dislodge illegal settlement

The move was contained in a communiqué made available to Sunday Trust in Minna yesterday stating that the settlements will be resettled to pave way for development projects in Kainji Park to boost its tourism potentials.

The proposed removal of the settlers was prompted by the authority of the national park which is in line with legal instrument restricting encroachment within the 5380 square kilometres of Zugurma and Borgu where the park is located.

“The objective of the meeting is to create the appropriate synergy between the officials of the national park service and those of the state government to work out modalities for the actualisation of the resettlement of the communities.

“Beyond the resettlement exercise, the Federal and Niger State Governments could collaborate to develop the lake-shore which has high potentials of eco-tourism to contribute to Niger State tourism potentials,” it said.

Fears observed at the one day workshop include the fact that the over 6000 human population in the place could cause severe environmental degradation in the place with dire consequences on the potentials of the national park.

The communiqué stated that the resettlement exercise will be done in the shortest possible time as it maintained that further delay will stall any developmental project in the area.
