Niger road collapses twice in one week

Five days after the Niger State Road Maintenance Agency (NIGROMA) fixed the collapsed Sabon-Gida Bridge along Minna-Bida Road, it has collapsed again.

Daily Trust recalled that many travelers including those that wanted to attend the Etsu Nupe’s 70th birthday on Monday had to return home following the collapse of the bridge, less than 40km to Bida town.

On Tuesday, when our correspondent visited the collapsed bridge, the state road maintenance agency was on the ground fixing it.

But, five days after, the travelers from Minna and Bida axis were stranded as the same bridge had collapsed again.

A commercial driver, Idris Mohammed, told our correspondent that motorists had to take shortcuts through villages to boycott the collapsed bridge while some of them diverted to Bida-Wushishi-Zungeru to come to Minna.

The contract for the reconstruction of Minna-Bida Road had been awarded to an indigenous contractor in 2018 at the cost of N24 billion but work is still far from completion. The state commissioner for works, Mohammed Sani Lafiya, could not be reached on the telephone.

When contacted, the public relations officer formerly known in the office said he had been transferred to another ministry.
