Niger state command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), says the state has recorded 516 road traffic accidents with a number of fatalities within a year.
The Sector Commander, Mr. Joel Ishaya Dagwa, who disclosed this at a press conference marking the 2018 World Remembrance Week for Road Traffic Crash Victims on Tuesday in Minna, also revealed that 197 persons died from accidents within the period.
He said the statistics covered 2017 even as he noted that the Command is stilling working on the figure for the first and second quarters of 2018.
“Based on the information available to FRSC, a total of 9,383 crashes were recorded with 2, 587 being fatal and 5,121 people killed across the country within the period with Niger state accounting for 516 crashes and 197 deaths”, he said.
He explained that the remembrance day was set aside by the United Nations to raise awareness on the need for people to be conscious of the danger of road traffic crashes, adding that this year’s event has “Road Have Stories” as its theme.
He said Niger serves as a major corridor for many highways, adding that the outlets with highest record of accidents and death rate were the state side of the Abuja-Kaduna , Mokwa-Jebba and Mokwa -Tegina-Birnin Gwari high ways.
The Sector Commander appealed to road users to appreciate the gravity attached to using the roads as doing so would greatly assist in reducing the rate of accidents in Nigeria’s highways.
He said parts of activities making this year’s event include engaging critical stakeholders in transport business, visiting crash victims in hospitals, advocacy visits to schools and other locations as well as prayers in Churches and Mosques.
