Niger LG chairman removed

The Chairman of Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State, Comrade Suleiman Dauda Chukuba, has been removed.

Chukuba was removed through popular votes of 11 out of 14 councillors of the LGA during their sitting at Kuta, headquarters of the council.

The chairman was removed over allegations levelled against him by the councillors, including embezzlement of funds as well as withdrawal and spending of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) without approval from the legislative council.

Other claims against him were gross misconduct and refusal to lay before the legislative council for a whole year estimate of revenues and expenditure of the local government.

Members of the legislative arm also alleged that after receiving approval from them to withdraw over N7 million to organise a workshop for their members, no event took place after four months.

The sitting, attended by 14 members, was presided over by the Leader of the House, Malam Yusuf Aliyu.

All the 14 councillors of Shiroro LGA proceeded to the Government House, Minna for a meeting with some key government officials after their sitting.

The death of one councillor this year has reduced their total number from 15 to 14.

Effort to contact the removed chairman, Comrade Chukuba, for comment over the allegations levelled against him was not successful as his lines were switched off.
