PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, however condemned the coup, saying no amount of imperfections in the country’s democratic governance should have led to the military takeover.

The PDP thus called for an immediate return of constitutional rule in Niger Republic, adding that it was never in contention that sovereignty belonged to the people and that only the people can choose their leaders.

Alkali said: “The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Vincent Eze Ogbulafor on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC) of our great party, therefore, condemns this unfortunate development in no uncertain terms.

“The Peoples Democratic Party is of the view that democracy no matter how imperfect is better than other forms of government. It was our expectation that the situation in Niger Republic should have been resolved without degenerating to military intervention.

“We therefore wish to join the Federal Government and all lovers of democracy in demanding for an immediate return of constitutional rule in Niger Republic. It is never in contention that sovereignty belongs to the people and only the people can choose their leaders,” he added.
